Keemun Congou

Keemun Congou is produced in the lowland region of Qimen in southern Anhui Province, south-west of Shanghai. It was not until the end of the 19th century that a man from Fujian started to cultivate black Congou teas in the Anhui region. He brought along knowledge and expertise from his home district of Fujian, and went against the local tradition of cultivating green tea to latch on to the demand from Europe. The tea quickly became popular worldwide and is considered one of the world's best black teas. Not only is it still drunk locally, but it is also exported. Keemun is now also the name for the subspecies of the tea plant used in production, and which is one of the reasons for the tea’s fine taste. It is also the only tea leaf in which a kind of oil called myrcenal can be found, which is said to give the tea its explicit sweetness.
